Brusheezy

We made this background on the programme, Brusheezy. We researched brushes on the website and like the handprints and splatters of blood. We chose black as our background as it signifies death and mystery. For the blood and handprint we chose to use the colour red as this is the colour of blood and the connotations of this colour is danger.

Research into Institutions

A conglomerate that may distribute ‘Bedevilment’ is the company Paramount Pictures Corporation. This is an American film and television production/distribution company, situated in Hollywood. The global company was founded in 1912 and currently owned by media conglomerate Viacom, which is America's oldest existing film studio. It is also the last major film studio still headquartered in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles. Paramount is consistently ranked as one of the largest (top-grossing) movie studios. The reason we believed that this company is suited to distribute our film was because this company is heavily involved with horror blockbusters such as ‘The Ring’ sequel, ‘My Bloody Valentine’ and ‘Sleepy Hollow’. Therefore if our company merges with Paramount Picture Corporation, our film stands a great chance to be successful and a top hit at the box office. It would also enable us to use high-tech equipment to create various suspenseful shots and also capture high definition graphics. The sound would also be clearer and create a larger impact. We could also make our film into a 3-dimension movie, such as ‘My Bloody Valentine’. This technique would be astounding as it emphasises the horror of the genre and captivate the emotion of fear. Not only would a high budget enable us to make a successful film, but it can also help us market our movie. For example we could advertise the film on TV, billboards, trailers and the Internet. This ensures that the audience are aware of our film production which means they are more likely to watch the film on the cinema when it is released or purchase the movie on DVD.

Unfortunately, we are an independent film production therefore this limits our budget. We are not able to produce a high tech blockbuster due to the lack of equipment therefore if we wanted to make our opening sequence into a feature film, we would somehow need to receive funds to help us with the budget. Therefore instead of having a mainstream Hollywood institution distributing our film is out of our budget, it may be better to have a lower scale company such as an independent film company with Hollywood ownership to distribute our film. For example Columbia Pictures Industries which is an American film production and distribution company. Columbia Pictures now forms part of the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment, a subsidiary of the Japanese conglomerate Sony. It is one of the leading film companies in the world, a member of the so-called Big Six. Columbia Pictures have also been known to recently produce films such as ‘Anonymous’ and ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’.

Another option is to have a small British independent film company to distribute our film, such as Coffee Film. This company produces independent thriller films and helps distribute films over the internet and also promote the film at film festivals. Coffee Film also has their own channel on ‘Youtube’ which enables the film to have numerous views and help distribute the film across to the audience. The reason why this company would be suitable to distribute our media product is because they specialise in distributing thriller films. Our film ‘Bedevilment’ is also a combination of both thriller and horror. Currently the company Coffee Film s promoting the film ‘Lucid’ and ‘The Death and Resurrection Show’.

Fear Film is another company that is eligible to distribute our film as they focus on distributing independent horror/thriller films. They work with several distribution companies around the world. This is an advantage as it means that our film can be distributed worldwide and become recognised globally as the company has connections across the world. Fear Film generally enters films into a film festival, where professionals decide whether or not the film is marketable and whether they would like to invest in the film.

Inspiration - The Grudge 2 Opening Sequence

This film as a whole was quite influential for me but the opening sequence particularly caught my eye (the opening sequence lasts up to 2.19).
The main focus of the opening sequence was to illustrate the base of what the rest of the film will be revolved around. This was quite obviously portrayed. There was no dialogue said by the protagonist, the only dialogue said was by the husband of the protagonists. The fewer the dialogue, the more the tension is built. This was visible in not only this film but many others I viewed. We also tried to keep the dialogue as less as possible, in our opening sequence, to create the atmosphere we wanted. Less speech starts to get the viewers on the 'edge of their seats' as they don't know what to expect.
In the opening sequence of this film, we see a major event occur before the film actually begins. This is quite common in horror films where an intense scene occurs immediately in the beginning of the film and leaves the viewers wanting to know why that just happened. The way the protagonist precipitously kills her husband, casually, and then gets on with her breakfast was quite humorous as well as grotesque. Once that scene ends, it fades into the title which is where the film officially begins to explain why that situation in the opening sequence took place. This is what we aspired to do by stimulating an abrupt opening sequence and have it end at a cliff-hanger.

Inspiration - Sorority Row

I liked the way the main event also took place in the forest - where the girls buried their 'sister'. I automatically knew the main horrific events would stem from this location and situation.

Inspiration And Analysis

Twilight

Twilight is another thriller which appealed to me due to the main location being the forest. As I saw this characteristic in many horror/thriller films, I thought it would be quite useful to use in our opening sequence. This is because it would immediately illustrate to the demographics that it is a thrill seeking film.
Most of the eventful scenes that took place in this film were all situated in the forest. The forest acted as an indication to the audience that something peculiar is about to take place. This is the approach we hope to achieve.

Monster House Opening Sequence Analysis

Monster House is aimed at children aged from 7 – 12 years. This is evidently illustrated by the visuals – it is animated. This automatically creates a light and calm atmosphere for the viewers. This is essential when targeting your film at the younger market as they will be aware it is surreal, thus it will not cause any psychological harm to any of them.
The title of the movie is emphasized through both visual and sound. The sound is built up and suddenly makes a large ‘bang’ sound as soon as the title appears. This helps to convey the genre of the film by making the audience suddenly jump from the unexpected sound and this creates a tensed atmosphere. The title is a large bold font and each letter looks as if it is in the shape of a house. The colour of the title is red which indicates negativity and danger. As the title appears, it gets larger and starts moving closer to the screen. This makes it seem as if the camera is going inside the title which designates that it is leading to something negative.

Which channels would we show our trailer on?

Choosing the correct channels to illustrate our trailer is essential in order for it to be appreciated by the viewers. Therefore, we will choose channels which thrill-seeking individuals will watch as they will then want to watch the actual film too. This includes choosing the channel which is attracted by our demographics.

The chosen channels are:
- Sky Movies Sci-fi & Horror
- Horror Free TV
- Film 4
- E4

Since we are a low budgeted company, we cannot afford to show our trailer on too many channels, as it will get quite costly. Thus, we have chosen our top 4 choices out of the list we made. This list contained all the movie channels available on TV.

Location Photos

The location at the start of the opening sequence is shown above. This was where the the protagonist and the friend are walking back from college.

The protagonist decides to take a short cut and parts with the friend as she walks through these gates; which were located in a forested area near our school.

The protagonist then walks down the path where she comes across a lake.

This is a photograph of a tree that we had to climb to be able to get an extreme high angle shot. The purpose of this is to represent the protagonists sheer vulnerability and also foreshadow that she may get lost as she seems minute in comparison to the forest itself.

Above are two images which present both a close up and a long shot of the lake. The protagonist comes across the lake within the opening sequence which she leaps over to be able to get to the other side.

This is an image of the area, deep in the forest, where the protagonist gets lost and rings her friend for guidance. The majority of the extract was filmed deep in the forest.
