Further, he tells that exorcisms are frauds but the results are good for the believers because they believe it is true. When Cotton is summoned by the farmer Louis Sweetzer to perform an exorcism in his daughter Nell, Cotton sees the chance to prove to the documentary crew what he has just told. They head to Ivanwood and they have a hostile reception from Louis's son Caleb. Cotton performs the exorcism in Nell, exposing his tricks to the camera, but sooner they learn that the dysfunctional Sweetzer family has serious problems.

William Peter Blatty, screenwriter and author of the novel The Exorcist, was inspired by an article he read in college at Georgetown University about an exorcism performed on a 13-year-old boy in Mount Rainier, Maryland in 1949. The story's details have been muddled through the years -- perhaps intentionally so, in order to protect the family -- but the boy's actual home lay in Cottage City, Maryland, and the exorcism was performed in St. Louis. Evidence points to the boy's behavior not being nearly as outrageous or supernatural as was portrayed in the film.

Religious Horror

A subgenre of Horror that relies on presenting the motifs of a real-life religion as fact within the story's universe. Since this is mainly a Western subgenre, that religion is Christianity (well, the only denomination that Hollywood knows of, at least).

Satan is the Big Bad in a typical Religious Horror story, although he's rarely shown. He is mediated through a human vessel, such as a Creepy Child or a degenerate rock musician. The protagonists are usually innocent people trying to live ordinary lives, not sensing anything wrong until their daughter or son starts speaking in someone else's voice, using foul languages she or he never studied, spewing Finnish pea soup, and/or chanting Satanic praises. Members of the clergy (most likely the Catholic variety; in this case it is justified by the fact that the Catholic church, of all the few that employ exorcism, is the most noted, although it does so very rarely) intervene eventually, with varying degrees of success. If there are human villains, they're evil cultists who facilitate Satan's activity on Earth (or, rarely, the Puritans of Salem, Massachusetts, if the author is less favorable toward organized religion in general). A variation is a woman giving birth to Satan's child. This type of horror is often written just to cash in on the popularity of The Exorcist.

Occasionally, the story revolves around a Religion of Evil that has nothing to do with Satan, which may or may not replace him with an Expy in the form of a God of Evil. These tend to be more creative than the Christianity-based novels, but not necessarily more bizarre, as you'll see.

Silent Hill movie trailer

Silent Hill is a 2006 horror film directed by Christophe Gans and written by Roger Avary. The story is an adaptation of the Silent Hill series ofsurvival horror video games created by Konami. The film, particularly its emotional, religious and aesthetic content as well as its creature design, includes elements from Silent HillSilent Hill 2 and 3. A game in the series released after the film, Silent Hill Homecoming, incorporates some elements of the film.

After being unconscious in a car crash outside the town, Rose awakens and is shocked to find Sharon missing and the town engulfed in an alternate reality of fog and falling ash. The Shining 2010 Trailer (HD)

The Shining is a 1980 psychological horror film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick, co-written with novelist Diane Johnson, and starring Jack NicholsonShelley Duvall, and Danny Lloyd. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. A writer, Jack Torrance, takes a job as an off-season caretaker at an isolated hotel. His young son possesses psychic abilities and is able to see things in the future and past, such as the ghosts who inhabit the hotel. Soon after moving in (after a winter storm that leaves the family snowed in) Jack becomes influenced by a supernatural presence at the hotel; he descends into madness and attempts to murder his wife and son.

Psychological Horror

The conventions of Psychological Horror rely heavily on the protagonists' fears and emotions. This creates a tense atmosphere which allows the viewers to sympathise with the characters' feelings by 'placing themselves in their shoes.'

The use of sound is also vital in psychological horror films as eerie sound effects are frequently used, which tend to be sharp, high pitched, sudden harsh sounds. The music is usually diegetic; as it is added in the film during the editing stage, however in some circumstances non-diegetic sound is also used; such as creaking doors or floorboards with the aid of a foley track.

Generally, protagonists in a horror tends to become emotionally unstable during the narrative as cannot cope with the pressures of the disturbing situation that they are involved in. This builds up tension which invokes fear and dread to the audience; fulfilling what the genre of horror is set out to achieve.

Meeting 1

In our first meeting, we believed it was essential to discuss the genres within the film Industry. This would enable us to decide what genre our moving extract should be, and also allow us to think of idea of our narrative easily. Below is a spider diagram we created, presenting various genres:

We came to a decisive conclsion that our opening sequence would portay the genre of Horror. Therefore we investigated the different sub-genres within Horror.

How we done this:
- We watched several horror films, in order to understand the principles & conventions needed to produce a successful opening sequence.
- Through the viewing of these opening sequences; we were able to analyse the concept for each film.
- This enabled us to conclude that there are five main sub-genres within Horror.

The five sub-genres are as follows:
-Psychological
-Religious
-Based upon True Story
-Gore
-Monster

About Me: Sepideh Keshtgar

My name is Sepideh Safaei-Keshtgar and I am currently studying at West Hatch Sixth Form. I studied Media at GCSE and it is a subject of most interest to me; as it allows me to explore my inner creativity. At GCSE, we were set the task to produce a print publication, advertising a holiday company using original images. This allowed me to explore a different aspect of Media as I captured sceneries through my chosen perspective. I continued to study Media at AS, where as a group, we produced an opening sequence to a Horror film, and it was fun to see everybody’s ideas come together and work as a team. Therefore I have chosen to continue with Media at A Level, and to pick up new skills and experience both individually and as a team.

About Me: Ruba Khan

Hello,
My name is Ruba Khan and I currently attend West Hatch Sixth Form. I started off studying Media at GCSE level where our task was to construct a print publication for a chosen product. As a team we chose to advertise a chocolate bar which we had to design together. We each got a different responsibility which we then discussed. My main role was to edit and design original images using Fire Fox and Photoshop. I enjoyed it immensely thus, decided to carry it onto AS. In AS we worked towards producing an opening sequence for a film. We divided the responsibilities equally; therefore we all had to do one of the roles at least once. This included editing using Final Cut Express, being the director, being the cameraman and being the actor. I have now carried it onto A2 whilst receiving qualifications in GCSE and AS meaning that I have been able to improve my media skills vastly and I will now be able to use them to the best of my ability for A2 whilst producing a music video with my group.
Last year I joined up to a Media Club outside of school in my own time, in which we also had to create a music video amongst unfamiliar people. This has enabled me to use those skills in this coursework by communicating with my group correctly and using all the technological skills I adapted. This includes Adobe Fireworks in which I gained many skills such as using 9 Slice Scaling.

Hello, our names are Ruba Khan and Sepideh Safaei-Keshtgar. Together we are working on our Foundation Portfolio where we will create a preliminary sequence. This enables us to demonstrate both our technical ability and enhance our understanding continuity editing. The second task we will be carrying out will involve developing a production produced to convey our developed skills; consisting of the first 2 minutes of a fiction film based on innovative ideas. We will work as a pair throughout the project. This entails preproduction which consists of researching, planning, developing our ideas into scripts and storyboards. The second stage is Production which involves filming our ideas using correct lighting according to our situational set. The last stage is Post production which focuses on editing, sound and special effects. Consequently we have created this blog in order to present these different stages. We will evaluate the finished film production which will also be presented in this blog.
